Brand New Design – Troja 16 – the legendary precision pendulum clock
manufactured by Erwin Sattler
According to Greek legend, the city of Troy in Asia Minor was tricked by Greek warriors. They were able to enter the city walls undetected by being hidden in the belly of a wooden horse. They conquered Troy because of this clever deception.
The grandfather clock Troja manufactured by the Erwin Sattler company is, on the one hand, a precision pendulum clock with a deviation of only 1-2 seconds per month. However, it has a secret like its historical namesake: a safe hidden in the base of the grandfather clock.
This safe for valuables has the stability and strength required by insurance companies and industrial norms because of heavy-duty bolts fastened to the floor or walls as well as a double-walled steel shell, a solid door with quadruple bolts and an electronic, recessed keypad lock. These security measures together with a house alarm system will permit insurance of valuables up to 130,000 Euros. (This may differ in other countries. Please consult with your insurance company.)
There is even a so-called medicine cabinet installed behind the clockwork that is not visible to the observer. Erwin Sattler company use this cabinet for two remote controlled units with altogether 16 Rotalis watch winders. Each winder is equipped with his own highpower motor and could individually programmed via integrated keypad with display or USB interface.
The precision clock itself is a remarkable timepiece as one would expect from the Erwin Sattler company.
The pendulum is made from super Invar to ensure proper compensation for temperature variations.
It’s stately length of one meter swings to the time in seconds in an elegant and calming cadence. At the same time, the pointer on the barometric compensator on the pendulum, indicates changes in barometric pressure.
The silver dial with unimpeded view of the quiet Graham-escapement with agate pallets is the perfect backdrop for the hand honed and blued hands.
11 rubies and 5 precise ball bearing, 4 mm thick front and backplate made of solid brass, and hardened parts are used for the clockwork. The cogwheels are milled individually and guarantee the quality needed for a precision of 1-2 seconds deviation per month. This, looked at another way, that the tip of the second hand, which covers 12 kilometers or 7.4564543 miles in one month, is off by only about 4 mm or 0.15748031 of an inch!
The housing is available in black lacquer with walnut casing in the back or completely in black. As usual with a Sattler clock, the lacquer finish is applied in 13 layers over a 14-day period.
